A dominant Opening Day outing signals Harlow’s professional potential.
Opening Day of the 2023 college baseball season brought Josh Harlow to the mound for Mercer against William & Mary, and the right-hander immediately delivered. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound transfer fired six shutout innings, allowing just one hit while striking out a career-high 11 batters.

Harlow’s gem proved crucial in Mercer’s 9-8 victory. After he exited, the Bears had to withstand a late comeback attempt by the Tribe, but the early cushion he built ultimately secured the Opening Day win and established him as a key piece of the rotation. Three days later, on February 20, he was named SoCon Pitcher of the Week, recognition that underscored the impact of his dominant debut and gave Mercer early-season momentum.
A Transfer Who Made an Immediate Impact
Harlow arrived at Mercer for the 2023 season as a transfer from Pitt Community College and quickly looked the part of a Friday starter. He opened the year 4-0 and limited opposing hitters to a .202 batting average. Through his first stretch of appearances, he positioned himself among the more effective arms in the conference.
Injuries, however, interrupted what appeared to be a breakout campaign. Harlow was limited to 29-1/3 total innings, but within that span he compiled a 2.15 ERA, allowed just seven earned runs, and struck out 35 batters. Even in a shortened season, the numbers reflected efficiency and swing-and-miss ability—traits that translate well beyond the collegiate level.
Returning in the SoCon Tournament
Late in the season, Harlow returned to contribute in the SoCon Tournament. Against UNCG, he delivered 2-2/3 scoreless innings in relief, providing valuable depth in postseason play. That outing reinforced both his value to the pitching staff, adding another meaningful chapter to his 2023 season.
From Mercer’s Opening Day Gem to the Guardians Organization
Harlow’s combination of size, velocity, and strikeout potential drew professional interest despite limited innings. In the 2023 MLB Draft, the Cleveland Guardians selected him in the 19th round with the 578th overall pick, marking the next step in his development.
He appeared in four games for the Guardians’ ACL team in 2023 before opening the 2024 season in Single-A. After a strong first half, he earned a promotion to High-A on July 29. Across the two Class A levels in 2024, Harlow recorded 62 strikeouts over 56-1/3 innings while maintaining a manageable walk rate.
Harlow spent the entire 2025 season in High-A, where he logged 50-2/3 innings and again posted strong strikeout totals. His walk rate, however, nearly doubled compared to the previous year, presenting an area for refinement as he works to climb the organizational ladder.

Across his minor league career, the pattern remains clear: Harlow’s ability to miss bats is a consistent strength, while command will be the determining factor in how quickly he advances. The Point After
Today in SoCon history is about moments that carry forward. Josh Harlow’s Opening Day gem at Mercer showcased his ability to command the stage and set the tone for a season. Though injuries limited his innings, his talent carried him into the professional ranks.
That February afternoon in Macon remains a benchmark—evidence that Opening Day can mark the beginning of a larger journey for both a player and a program.
