On March 4, 1997, Johnny Taylor was named the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Year

The Making of a SoCon Star

Johnny Taylor’s path to SoCon greatness began when he joined the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) Mocs in 1995 as a junior transfer. A Chattanooga native, Taylor’s arrival brought both local excitement and renewed optimism to the program. Over two seasons (1995–96 and 1996–97), he developed into one of the most dominant forwards in the conference, combining scoring ability, athleticism, and leadership in a way that transformed the Mocs into a national contender.

Taylor’s numbers reflected his consistency and impact. He shot an impressive .497 from the field and averaged 17.3 points per game—ranking fourth on UTC’s all-time scoring list. His career total of 1,070 points stands 11th in school history, an impressive feat given that he played only two seasons. But beyond the statistics, Taylor’s influence was measured by the confidence he inspired in teammates and the energy he brought to every game.

The 1996–97 Season: A Historic Run

The 1996–97 season remains the most celebrated in Chatt’s history, and Johnny Taylor was its driving force. Under his leadership, the Mocs captured the Southern Conference Tournament Championship, earning an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. What followed was a magical run that would forever define the program and elevate the Southern Conference’s national profile.

UTC entered the NCAA Tournament as an underdog but quickly became one of its most compelling stories. Led by Taylor, the Mocs stunned higher-seeded Georgia and Illinois, advancing to the Sweet 16—the program’s deepest run in history. The team’s success captivated fans across the country and demonstrated that SoCon teams could compete with—and defeat—college basketball’s elite.

Taylor’s leadership during that run exemplified SoCon basketball excellence: a blend of skill, determination, and belief that transcended expectations. His ability to rise to the occasion on the national stage made him not only the conference’s best player but also one of its most enduring symbols of success.

From SoCon Greatness to the NBA

Taylor’s collegiate dominance earned him a place in professional basketball history. In 1997, he became the only first-round NBA Draft pick in UTC history, selected 17th overall by the Orlando Magic. His selection validated both his individual talent and the strength of the Southern Conference as a platform for developing elite players.

Following his time with the Magic, Taylor also played for the Denver Nuggets, showcasing the same versatility and work ethic that defined his college years. In 2000, he began an international career that spanned more than a decade, playing in Italy, the Philippines, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Lebanon, Belgium, Japan, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates. His global success reflected his adaptability and passion for the game, traits that had made him a standout long before he left Chattanooga.

In recognition of his contributions, Taylor was inducted into the UTC Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005, a fitting tribute to a player whose impact extended far beyond the court.

A Legacy That Defines SoCon Basketball Excellence

Johnny Taylor’s career stands as a defining example of SoCon basketball excellence. His achievements—both at UTC and beyond—represent the best of what the Southern Conference has to offer: talent, perseverance, and the ability to shine on the biggest stages.

His story continues to inspire new generations of SoCon athletes who aim to follow in his footsteps, proving that greatness can emerge from any program, given the right mix of dedication and opportunity.

The Point After

On March 4, 1997, when Johnny Taylor was named the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Year, it was more than an individual accolade—it was a celebration of a player who embodied the pride, passion, and excellence of SoCon basketball.

From leading the Mocs to the Sweet 16 to becoming UTC’s only first-round NBA Draft pick, Taylor’s journey remains one of the most remarkable in conference history. His legacy endures as a reminder that SoCon basketball excellence is not just about winning games—it’s about leaving a lasting mark on the sport and inspiring those who follow.

SoConAllHere.com was created to fill a gap that has long existed in sports coverage. When fans visit major outlets like ESPN, CBS, or Fox, they often see the same handful of powerhouse programs featured again and again. While that approach makes sense from a national perspective, it leaves countless programs, athletes, and stories overlooked.

Across the country—and especially within the Southern Conference—there is a deep tradition of excellence that rarely receives the attention it deserves. SoConallhere exists to change that. This platform was built to give Southern Conference fans a dedicated home and to bring visibility to the teams and individuals who consistently compete, achieve, and inspire outside the national spotlight.

SoConallhere is more than news and analysis. It is a platform devoted to Southern Conference teams, athletes, and history—past, present, and future—ensuring that the legacy and ongoing excellence of SoCon sports are seen, shared, and appreciated.
