Power Surges, Costly Errors, and Missed Opportunities Define a 3–3 Midweek for the Southern Conference

The Southern Conference’s midweek slate yielded a mixed set of results, as the league finished with a 3–3 record overall. Mercer, Samford, and VMI turned in dominant performances, each securing decisive victories. In contrast, The Citadel and Wofford managed just two hits apiece in their respective losses, while Western Carolina fell to a lowly Presbyterian squad. UNC Greensboro and ETSU were idle this week.

SoCon Non-Conference Performance

The Southern Conference continues to perform well overall in non-conference play, boasting a 123–69 (.641) record. However, results against Power Five opponents remain a challenge, particularly against the ACC and SEC.

Samford @ West Georgia (RPI 240, ASun) — W 16–1

Samford Baseball exploded offensively in a dominant 16–1 win over West Georgia, showcasing one of the most complete performances of the SoCon midweek. The Bulldogs launched seven home runs, including two from Parker McDonald, while Luke Boykin, Hayden Perry, Cade Carr, Jake Souders, and Will Lawrence each added one.

The pitching staff was equally sharp. Will Andre, Palmer O’Beirne, Austin Tommasini, and Andrew Marble combined for 11 strikeouts, holding West Georgia to minimal offensive production. This was a statement win for a Samford team that had been seeking consistency, and it came at the perfect time before hosting ETSU for a key weekend series.

Western Carolina vs Presbyterian (RPI 284, Big South) — L 6–5

Western Carolina suffered a disheartening home loss to Presbyterian, a team with only five prior wins entering the game. The Catamounts’ recurring issue of slow starts continued as they fell behind 4–0 through four innings. Wyatt Stanley provided the lone offensive spark, hitting two home runs and driving in four runs, but it wasn’t enough to overcome another bullpen collapse.

Reliever Jacob Arnberger’s struggles in the seventh inning proved costly, as Presbyterian extended its lead to 6–2. After retiring the first two batters, Arnberger unraveled—surrendering a single, issuing a walk, and then allowing a backbreaking two-run double. Despite recording those initial outs, he was unable to finish the inning.

The Catamounts mounted a late rally in the ninth but ultimately came up short. With a trip to Big South leader Winthrop (21–8) on the horizon, Western Carolina faces increasing pressure to stabilize its pitching and improve its early-game execution.

Mercer vs Kennesaw State (RPI 48, CUSA) — W 14–4

Mercer rebounded impressively from a sweep at Oregon State by dismantling Kennesaw State 14–4 in seven innings. The Bears’ offense erupted for four home runs—courtesy of Michael Graziano, Eli Stephens, Drew Johnson, and Chris Katz—while Stephens’ grand slam in the fourth inning broke the game open.

Mercer’s relentless attack snapped Kennesaw State’s five-game winning streak and reaffirmed the Bears’ offensive firepower. The balanced performance on both sides of the ball makes this the week’s most complete showing in SoCon play. The Bears now prepare for a conference road series against UNC Greensboro.

VMI @ William & Mary (RPI 137, CAC) — W 10–3

SoCon baseball midweek recap

VMI delivered a well-rounded road victory over William & Mary, 10–3, powered by timely hitting and late-inning execution. After trading early runs, the Keydets broke the game open in the seventh inning with RBI hits from Grayson Fitzwater, Bradley Garner, and Cole Cook. Fitzwater added two more RBIs in the eighth as VMI pulled away.

Garner’s home run in the sixth and the team’s ability to capitalize on Tribe mistakes underscored a disciplined performance. The Keydets will look to carry this momentum into their upcoming SoCon series against Wofford.

Wofford vs South Carolina (RPI 101, SEC) — L 11–1 (7 innings)

Facing SEC competition, Wofford was overmatched in an 11–1 loss to South Carolina. The Terriers managed only two hits against six Gamecock pitchers. Their lone run came in the fourth inning when Logan Tribble scored on a wild pitch after reaching base via a hit-by-pitch.

South Carolina’s offense exploded in the fifth, hitting two three-run home runs to seize control. Despite the lopsided result, Wofford remains atop the SoCon standings and will look to rebound in conference play against VMI.

The Citadel vs No. 14 Coastal Carolina (Sun Belt) — L 3–2

This matchup featured two teams with strikingly similar styles—fitting, as they rank first and second nationally in sacrifice bunts. The Citadel came close to pulling off an upset against the nationally ranked Chanticleers but ultimately fell 3–2 in a heartbreaking ninth inning.

The Bulldogs carried a 2–1 lead into the final frame, fueled by a TJ Anderson sacrifice fly and a Coastal error that allowed Christian Stratis to bring home the go-ahead run. However, a wild pitch evened the score before Coastal’s Dean Mihos delivered the decisive RBI single.

Phillips Daniels accounted for both of The Citadel’s hits in a game defined by small-ball execution and missed opportunities. The Bulldogs will look to regroup as they prepare to host Longwood next.

Kenny Rogers

Was a three-sport athlete in high school, with aspirations of playing basketball at the next level. In his senior year, he served as the seventh man on a six-deep team that reached the Alabama State Playoffs in Tuscaloosa. At the time, he made the controversial decision to send recruitment tapes to colleges on audio cassettes. “I stand by my decision. I needed to do something different to get recruiters to notice me.” After receiving no offers from D1, DII, DIII, NAIA, JUCO, cosmetology, or small gasoline engine repair schools that advertised in the back of magazines in the ’80s, he decided to sit out competitive basketball in college while attending Auburn University. After graduation, marriage, and starting a family, he returned to the hardcourt for a dominant 10-year run against his children, ages 2 through 11. He has written extensively on the Auburn Tigers and SEC sports. In January 2026, he launched SoConAllHere.com to give Southern Conference fans a dedicated home and to bring greater visibility to the teams and athletes competing in the conference.

Here’s our story

Website Logo

SoConAllHere.com was created to fill a gap that has long existed in sports coverage. When fans visit major outlets like ESPN, CBS, or Fox, they often see the same handful of powerhouse programs featured again and again. While that approach makes sense from a national perspective, it leaves countless programs, athletes, and stories overlooked.

Across the country—and especially within the Southern Conference—there is a deep tradition of excellence that rarely receives the attention it deserves. SoConallhere exists to change that. This platform was built to give Southern Conference fans a dedicated home and to bring visibility to the teams and individuals who consistently compete, achieve, and inspire outside the national spotlight.

SoConallhere is more than news and analysis. It is a platform devoted to Southern Conference teams, athletes, and history—past, present, and future—ensuring that the legacy and ongoing excellence of SoCon sports are seen, shared, and appreciated.
